Nano-particle size reduction:
Most of today’s applications for nano-particles such as sunscreens, targeted and controlled release drug delivery systems, transparent coatings, contrast agents, ink, etc. - utilize nano-particles in a liquid vehicle. To produce products such as these our customers need nano-particles in stable liquid emulsions and dispersions.
Emulsions:
Emulsions are stable mixtures of oil and water, with one of them dispersed into the other in the form of fine droplets. There are "oil-in-water" emulsions, such as salad dressing and skin care creams, and "water-in-oil" emulsions, such as margarine and nutraceuticals. Surfactants are added to facilitate emulsion formation through the reduction of the interfacial tension, which reduces the pressure gradient required for drop breakup.
The following important factors affect the stability and efficacy of the emulsions:
Droplet Size – surface area per unit volume and droplet size distribution.
Narrow particle size distribution – most of the droplets at or below the target size and no "tails" on the distribution graph.
Dispersions:
Many applications, such as injectible medications and fuel cells require suspensions of nanoparticles in an aqueous medium. Benefits of having small particles include:

Cell Rupture:
Cell rupture or disruption, is where the cell envelope is physically broken, releasing all intercellular components into the surrounding medium.
The controllable high intensity of DeBEE systems ideal for cell rupture, which is accomplished by three different mechanisms:
· Impingement on entry to the nozzle area
· High liquid shear in the nozzle
· Sudden pressure drop upon discharge
· The combination causes the cells to explode.
Dual Feed for Abrasive and Viscous Materials:
Effortlessly process waxes, ceramics and metal powders!
Some materials are very hard to process by a nozzle based homogenizer:
· Very viscous materials, which tend to clog the nozzle
· Hot materials, which may affect non-metal seals
· Hard and abrasive materials, which could cause rapid wear of the nozzle
· Materials that must be fed in direct powder form
A key feature of DeBEE homogenizers is a unique Dual Feed feature, which makes use of high pressure for size reduction without passing abrasive materials through machine parts that are sensitive to wear. It enables metered amounts of the difficult material to be fed through a special port beyond the nozzle, there to be processed by the high speed jet coming through the nozzle, avoiding the above problems.

Processing Polymers:
